The restaurants in the area are top class, serving a mouth watering menu to please any pallet. Turkish cuisine is thought by some to be the best in the world, having a climate that allows almost anything to be freshly grown. Many of the restaurants are family orientated. If you order Mezes for your hors d'hoeurves, you will be able to sample a bit of everything including stuffed vine leaves, lamb and fish dishes. Meat dishes are usually grilled variations on kebabs, though not like the takeaways back home. If fish and seafood are your favourite you will not be dissapointed, as they are delicious! The Turkish are well know for their sweet tooth, from Turkish Delight, sweet pastries and rice pudding desserts are just some of what is on offer. Beer and wine are also very good, but fresh fruit juice and coffee excel. The national drink is black tea, while the national spirit is the aniseed flavoured Raki, or Lions milk, but be warned, this drink is definitely for the brave.
Alanya is one hour away from Belek and if you wish to go sightseeing, Alanya is a fantastic place to visit. It boasts of an old walled town and castle which is breathtaking. Anthony presented Alanya to Cleopatra in 44bc! There is also a museum built around a shady garden and housing some artifacts from nearby ruins, including a tablet inscribed in Phoenician, as well as kilims and Ottoman furnishings. The nearby Damlatas (Cave of dripping stones) affords a glance at some weird stalagmites, and its moist warmth is said to be beneficial to asthma sufferers.
